About Malheur County

Malheur County is in far eastern Oregon along the Idaho border, with Vale as its county seat. Established in 1887 from the southern part of Baker County, it is identified on the Oregon Judicial Department page as the second largest county in the state and part of Oregon’s 9th Judicial District. The county takes its name from the French phrase “Riviere au Malheur,” or “Unfortunate River,” a reference the court page attributes to French trappers in the Snake River country in 1825-1826. Malheur County is also the only Oregon county in the Mountain Time Zone, reflecting its geographic and economic ties to Idaho’s Snake River Valley. Agriculture remains central to the county’s identity; the court page notes that Malheur grows more acres of onions, sugar beets, and alfalfa hay than any other county in Oregon. The courthouse itself reflects that long local history, with earlier courthouses dating to 1887 and 1902 before the current red brick building was completed in 1958. Today the county is defined by its border location, agricultural economy, and longstanding role as eastern Oregon’s connection to the Snake River corridor.
